Area Cadet Camp 2011 with the theme of "Forever as One" has been organized by SJAM Muar Area from 17th December 2011 to 21st December 2011. With a total of 106 cadets member from various division under SJAM Muar Area and also 22 adults and cadet NCOs as organizing committee members, this camp was a success and memorable one. Area Commander would like to thanks the leadership of Mdm Ng Teng Teng as organising chairman who lead the committee and made this camp a success.

ST John Ambulance Malaysia’s (SJAM) Penang branch is initiating a project to assist disaster relief efforts for flood victims in Thailand.

SJAM state commander Datuk Dr Yee Thiam Sun said the project, named ‘Humanitarian Mission for Thailand’, was carried out in response to instructions given by the Prime Minister’s Department.

“We are ordered by the department to be the main coordinator in the northern region to gather resources from various NGOs and charity organisations here to help Thailand,” he said.

He said a centre would be set up at SJAM Penang headquarters on Grove Road to collect items that meet the immediate needs of flood victims.

Yee said items needed are first aid kits, survival kits, drinking water, life jackets, camping lamps, flashlights, mosquito repellent, mosquito nets, rowing boats, rafts, tents, rubber boots, effective microorganism (EM), water pumps, electricity generators, drinking water supply mobile units, drinking water tanks and mobile toilets.

“We need help from the public. They are welcome to bring the items to the collecting centre during office hours, which is from 9am to 5pm,” he told a press conference in George Town.

He added that SJAM would like to recruit volunteers for a trip to Bangkok for disaster relief and restoration works.

“We have yet to finalise the time to go there, it depends on the coordination with the Thai government,” he said.

Thai consul-general Voradet Viravakin, who was also at the press conference, said he appreciated SJAM’s offer to help Thailand battle the worst floods in 50 years.

On 9th October 2011, JPMM Bentayan together with NGOs in Muar including SJAM Muar Area had organised an 1 Malaysia National Charity Run in order to raise fund for PDK Maharani and Chung Hwa High School. This run consist of 3 categories which are 21km, 11km and 5.5km. SJAM Muar has been request to provide medical standby for this run. A total of 50 officers and members headed and command by Dr. Richard Keah, Area Commander, SJAM Muar Area attended this medical stanby. Blood Donation Campaign 2011

Emergency Medical Air Rescue Service Training (EMARS)

SJAM National Training Wing in collaboration with Royal Malaysia Police Air Unit had organised an 2nd batch of Emergency Medical Air Rescue Service Training on 19th, 20th, and 26th February 2011 in RMPAU Sungai Besi Air Base. The purpose of this course is to train our officers and members in providing more efficient emergency transfer by using the helicopter in cooperation with Royal Malaysia Police Air Unit. Marshaling of helicopter, winching and a mock drill were done in the course. SJAM Muar Area was represented by Mr. Koh Chee Siang and Mr. Tan Suo Jie. Both of them have successfully pass this course and we hope they will provide a better service in Muar as well as in Johor.

Integrated call centre to link up all ambulance services needed

A LACK of a proper centralised call centre for pre-hospital care (out-of-hospital acute medical care and/or transport to definitive care) is probably one of the main reasons why there has been many unsatisfactory feedback on local ambulance service.

St John Ambulance Malaysia commander-in-chief Datuk Dr Low Bin Tick said a centralised and integrated call centre would cut down response time during emergencies.

He said that with the current system, there was wasted time and sometimes even wasted resources due to poor communication.

“Due to a lack of integration, two ambulances may arrive at the same place. It is a waste of resources and it ends with a lot of confusion.

“Sometimes, response is given too late. When an ambulance arrives at a scene, it is too late to save the victim. During an emergency, every second counts,” he said, adding that it was time to have a comprehensive system to link up all ambulance services.

Dr Low highlighted that most people manning the ambulances were not paramedics but medical assistants. The latter are people who assist doctors and are trained in first aid.

“A paramedic is a healthcare professional specialising in emergency medical care that is delivered outside of a clinical environment such as a hospital.

“A paramedic primarily works as part of the emergency medical services, providing advanced levels of care for acute medical problems and trauma cases, followed — where appropriate — by transfer to definitive care,” he explained.

He said that in the present system, an ambulance driver was also not trained in medical care.

“When a hospital receives an emergency call, a team of medical assistants who are trained in pre-hospital care are sent to the location. However, many hospitals either do not have such qualified people or enough of them. So they may rely on NGOs like us,” he added.

Currently St John Ambulance is providing emergency services to only Kuala Lumpur (south), Selangor, Batu Pahat and Pontian in Johor, Teluk Intan in Perak, Gurun in Kedah and Penang.

Dr Low said some ambulances were not properly equipped with medical tools such as an automated external defibrillator (AED).

HE said the AED was a portable device that checked the heart rhythm and could send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm.

“It is used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), which is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. When this happens, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs. SCA usually causes death if it is not treated within minutes.

“Even if a good Samaritan picks up a casualty, he is untrained and can end up making it worse for the victim, especially accident victims, as they may unknowingly aggravate a spinal injury,” he said.

Flood Relief Operation II

Flood Relief Operation II was run for continuously 2 days on 4/2/2011 and 5/2/2011. It was leaded by Dr. Teo Shee Juin on the first day and Mr. Oh Su Thong on the second day. We visited IKBN Evacuation Center, SJK(C) Soon Mong Evacuation Center, Panchor, Lenga, and Hai Nan Association Evacuation Center,Gresik. We sent food and mineral water that was sponsored by public to the flood victim in the evacuation center. We also provide blood pressure check up and also gave the flood victim some health advice during this operation. Hereby, we thanks all the donation from the public as well as officers and members who gave full cooperation in making this flood relief operation a success.

Flood Relief Operation I

A flood relief operation was lead by Mr. Tan Suo Jie and his team A/Sergeant Lim Zhao Long, A/Coperal Chin Chee Haw, A/Private Gan Chang Yen, A/Private Thomas Tee and A/Private Kevin Chia around Muar area. They visited 3 evacuation centre which are Dewan Serbaguna Pagoh, Dewan Sri Mentulang SARSI, Pagoh and IKBN, Pagoh. They also went into Panchor and look for the condition there. They had done some treatment to patient who are injuried, checking blood pressure and blood sugar for victims who are having hypertension and diabetes. They also did some survey on victims need, then biscuit and mineral water were sent to them after the visit. Copters need medics, hardware alone not enough, says SJAM

PETALING JAYA: Medical helicopters alone will not enhance Malaysia’s emergency service if there are not enough professional paramedics, said St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) commander-in-chief Datuk Dr Low Bin Tick.

“It is not just about acquiring the hardware. If we do not have specially-trained and qualified paramedics, more helicopters or ambulances would not make a difference in saving lives,” he said.

He urged the Government to have more job opportunities for paramedics in government hospitals after they have completed their pre-hospital programmes.

On Nov 30, it was reported that Malaysia was enhancing its emergency response service, to include the use of medical helicopters to evacuate patients in critical condition in a disaster situation.

Kuala Lumpur Hospital emergency and trauma department head Prof Datuk Dr Abu Hassan Asaari Abdullah who is also Malaysian Society of Traumatology and Emergency Medicine president, said the proposed integrated emergency response service would include having five such helicopters each in Sabah and Sarawak and five each in the northern, central and southern zones of the peninsula.

Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president Dr David Quek said the plan might not be very viable.

“There might be a problem finding a place to land the helicopters and it could be quite costly to maintain them,” he said.

He suggested the Government invest in developing more trained paramedics and adopt the motorcycle ambulance system, like in Thailand, to reach to patients in time to stabilise and resuscitate them especially during traffic jams.

Dr Low added SJAM had started a Diploma in Pre-Hospital programme with the Open University Malaysia in the beginning of this year but only received 10 students for the first batch.

SJAM’s chief training officer Datuk Dr Lee Hoo Teong said pre-hospital programmes were not a popular choice.

“Emergency rescue training is not emphasised when training medical assistants.

“The training is crucial to enable paramedics to make on-the-spot decisions in a calm manner during urgent situations.

“For every one minute a person is not resuscitated, the person has a 10% less chance of surviving,” said Dr Lee.

St. John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) is one of the most active voluntary organization is Malaysia. With over 60,000 volunteers nationwide, St. John Ambulance Malaysia is dedicated in promoting and encouraging all works of humanity and charity without any discrimination of race, class or creed. SJAM members carry out first aid and home nursing duties in public event and function to enable immediate assistance rendered when there is needed.

Through our various programme and training modules, SJAM volunteers are not solely in First Aid training, as a First Aid voluntary Non-Governmental Organization, our volunteers also exposed to various generic skill training through our activities.

Our members are consist of following categories:

i) Ambulance and Nursing Adult Members

The membership is open to any individual who keen to help the community, service to mankind, age from 16-65 years old. Members are trained in First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS), equipped to render assistance to those sick and injured. Additional advance training and life saving modules will be added for interested members.

Potential members will get promoted to Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) and Officers to lead the members and organization.

Adult members will carry our First Aid Duties, Community Service, lead and train the cadets and juniors, ambulance service, home nursing and etc.

ii) Ambulance and Nursing Cadet Members

Any individual between age 10-18 years old can apply to join us as cadets. Cadets are trained in Basic First Aid, Foot Drill and taking part in various interactive activity. The programme enables young people to learn important life skill in a fun and safe environment but with challenge and excitement appropriate to their age. The target of the cadets will be the Grand Prior Award, which is the highest award for St. John Ambulance Cadet World Wide.

iii) St. John Juniors

St. John Juniors membership are open to boys and girls age 8-11. Junior are encourage in their mental physical development and prepared for the challenges of being a Cadets. They are expose to the "Essential of First Aid" and will include other subject such as First Aid and Nursing knowledge and introduction to SJAM, Road and Home Safety, General Knowledge and Physical Recreation.

Programme Synopsis

The purpose of emergency medical care is to stabilize patients who have a life-threatening or limb-threatening injury or suffering from severe respiratory, cardiac and other diseases. Unlike many of the western countries, there is a lack of specialized staff to deal with advanced pre-hospital emergency care in Malaysia. Medical emergency also arises in communities during sports meet, celebrations, violence, war, terrorism and disaster. In the latter case, many other global disaster relief organizations offer help for a temporary period.

St. John Ambulance of Malaysia, a non profit organization, is providing voluntary service for emergency care for many decades. First aid and home nursing is their main duty. The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS), a branch of British Red Cross also provides emergency care service. Various public, private and university hospitals in Malaysia also have trauma and emergency units to bring patients to the hospitals after offering them minimum urgent care.

Realizing the above aspects, Open University Malaysia (OUM) in collaboration with St. John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) contemplates to develop a 3-year Diploma program in pre-hospital emergency care using its blended pedagogy of face to face learning, on-line participation of learners to interact with tutors and their peers, self learning through a module and relevant materials in Tan Sri Abdullah Sanusi Digital Library of OUM and practical’s at St. John Ambulance Malaysia branches in Malaysia as well as in hospitals. OUM at a later stage intends to develop an on-line programme to reach a greater mass of learners throughout Malaysia and abroad.

Rationale For Introducing The Programme

1. here is an urgent need to develop a sophisticated pre-hospital emergency care system in Malaysia to upgrade knowledge and skills of emergency care technicians.

2. Training of a large number of staff for various organizations offering pre-hospital emergency care could be achieved through collaboration of local first aid organizations and support from some selected hospitals. St. John Ambulance Malaysia has about 600 pre-hospital emergency care staff at various branches in Malaysia.

3. OUM's flexible learning system is affordable from the adult learners’ point of view.

4. Students may be able to opt for a degree programme after their graduation. Therefore at a later stage, OUM needs to develop a degree programme for pre-hospital emergency care.

Objectives

1. To develop a 3-year diploma programme with a blended pedagogy on pre-hospital emergency care course for approval from Malaysian Quality Agency (MQA) and Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

2. To obtain registration of the successful graduates from the Ministry of Health (MOH) as a health professional/paramedic for employment in various hospitals and other agencies.

3. To help the Nation to develop a group of professional paramedic that will enhance the image of the pre-hospital emergency care in Malaysia.

4. To create competent specialized staff for pre-hospital emergency care in Malaysia and abroad to serve patients more efficiently and effectively.

5. To develop professional health care staff with IT competency, and capable of undertaking research in emergency medical care.

Course Details

This is a 3-year diploma course and emphasis throughout the programme is the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to the care of the patients in the pre-hospital care management

Other important areas of study include the development of students’ overall ability by providing them the IT skills, sufficient knowledge of English, oral communication skills, and issues related to ethics, professionalism and entrepreneurship. Students also need to undertake the MQA prescribed courses such as Moral/Islamic education, Malaysian studies and Bahasa Kebangsaan/Bahasa Malaysia.

Target Groups

Paramedics at Hospitals, Pre-hospital Care Providers, Aid Organizations, Disaster Relief Organizations, Factories and Housewives.

Sultan of Johor Passes Away

JOHOR BARU: The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail, passed away at the Puteri Specialist Hospital here at 7.08pm on Friday. He was 77 years old.

He will be buried at the Royal Mausoleum at 2pm on Saturday. Members of the public can pay their respects at the Istana Besar from 9am 10.30am, while dignitaries can do so from 11am to noon.

He was admitted earlier Friday due to an unspecified illness.

Sultan Iskandar was born on April 8, 1932 in Johor Baru and became Sultan on May 11, 1981. He was also the eighth Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, from April 26, 1984 until April 25, 1989.

Two hours before his death, the Tengku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ibrahim Ismail was appointed the Regent.

News about the Sultan not being well had surfaced Thursday night. Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman cut short his trip to India with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and returned by 6pm on Friday.

The first to visit the Sultan in the morning was the Sultan and Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, who arrived by helicopter, while former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi visited him at about 3.40pm.

By then, the press and a large group of members of the public were waiting at the lobby of the hospital. Media offices were inundated with calls from people who wanted to know about the sultan’s condition.

Tunku Ismail and the Raja Muda of Johor Tunku Ismail Idris Tunku Ibrahim Ismail left the hospital at 4.40pm.

The swearing-in of the regent was held soon after at the Istana Besar here.

In the ceremony, Johor Council of Royal Court Yang DiPertua Tunku Osman Tunku Temenggong Ahmad declared that Tunku Ibrahim will perform the duties of the Sultan of Johor as required under Section 9(1)(b) and 9(2) of the Johor State Constitution 1895.

During his declaration of oath as acting ruler, Tunku Ibrahim said that he would rule fairly for all the rakyat (people).

“I also swear to guard and respect Islam as well as the Malay tradition under the state constitution,” he said.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Tengku Bendahara Tunku Majid Idris, Raja Muda Tunku Ismail Ibrahim, Johor State assembly speaker Datuk Ali Hassan, Johor Mufti Datuk Tahrir Shamsuddin, Johor Islamic Council adviser Datuk Nooh Gadut, several state executive council members and state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff.

Sultan Iskandar is survived by his wife Sultanah Zanariah Almarhum Tunku Ahmad and 10 children, including Tengku Mahkota Tunku Ibrahim Ismail and Tengku Bendahara Tunku Majid Idris.

He received his early education at Ngee Heng Primary School in Johor Baru before furthering his studies at English College, now known as Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar.

He later furthered his studies at the Trinity Grammar School in Australia and then to United Kingdom.

Upon completing his studies in 1956, Sultan Iskandar returned to Johor and served as a cadet officer with the Johor Civil Service. He was formally appointed the Tengku Mahkota (Crown Prince) on April 29, 1981. On May 11, 1981, he was proclaimed the fourth Sultan of Johor following his father’s death.

He also received basic military training with the Johor Military Forces founded by his great-grandfather Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar in 1885. He was the commander of the military before he passed away.

In his younger days, his hobbies including horse-riding, fast cars, go-carts, race boats, hunting, tennis, golf, boxing, swimming and polo.

Water purification tablets to help typhoon victims

St. John Ambulance Malaysia has contributed 52,000 water purification tablets to help typhoon victims in the Philippines get clean water supply.

When dropped into water, the tablets would produce hypoclorous acid or dry chlorine.

This could kill bacteria and prevent waterborne diseases such as hepatitis, cholera, typhoid and dysentery, which were likely to break out after Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) typhoons, wreaked havoc in the Philippines last month and last Saturday respectively, affecting millions of people and killing hundreds.

St John Ambulance commander-in-chief Datuk Dr Low Bin Tick said the supply could benefit at least 5,000 families with a strip of 10 tablets for a family.

“One tablet can sterilise a litre of water and last two to three days.

“The typhoon victims had suffered a lot. We don’t want them to get into further misery,” he said when presenting the contribution to the Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Victoriano M. Lecaros at the Philip-pines Embassy recently.

“Although we won’t be able to help more, we hope that this will inspire other organisations to come forward to help,” Low said.

Lecaros expressed appreciation to St John for the initiative and assured that the supply would reach those who really need it in the Philippines.

“It’s not just a matter of sending the consignment. We have to ensure that the consignment is not misplaced or damaged and somebody is there to receive it,” he said, adding that Malaysia was paving the way in doing good for its neighbouring countries hit by natural disasters.

On the third wave of typhoon, which may be on its way, he said: “So far, the winds are not as threatening. There are more lessons to be learnt. There is a link to global warming.”

He also said that life went on as usual as schools reopened and students went back to school even though some of the buildings were damaged by the typhoon.

SJAM Kawasan Muar juga memberi sumbangan kepada masyarakat dengan perkhidmatan ambulans bukan kecemasan, perawatan dan perkhidmatan ambulans kecemasan di lebuh raya. Ahli-ahli kami, baik muda mahupun dewasa, juga turut serta dalam perkhemahan latihan, pertandingan pertolongan cemas, kursus latihan pertolongan cemas dan perawatan di rumah, seminar dan bengkel.

Menjelang ulang tahun Ke-60, semua ahli dan pegawai St. John Ambulans Malaysia bersama-sama meraikan sejarah dan tradisi khidmat mereka yang gemilang sejak 1949. Sebagai sebuah pertubuhan sukarela, SJAM Kawasn Muar sering berhadap dengan kesukaran sumber kewangan untuk menjalankan aktiviti dan memberi perkidmatan kepada orang ramai. Sebagai pertubuhan yang tidak mempunyai sumber pendapatan, St. John Ambulans bergantung penuh kepada pendermaan dan sokongan orang ramai. Dengan itu SJAM Kawasan Muar ingin menanjurkan satu Masjlis Malam Untuk Mengumpul Dana Ambulans & Aktiviti SJAM Kawasan Muar.

Kriteria-kriteria untuk menyokong SJAM Kawasan Muar dalam majlis boleh dibahagikan kepada kategori-kategori berikut:

KUALA LUMPUR 27 Ogos - St. John Ambulans Malaysia (SJAM) akan menyediakan perkhidmatan ambulans kecemasan 24 jam di beberapa lokasi lebuh raya pada 18, 19, 26 dan 27 September ini sempena sambutan Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Pemerintah Agung SJAM, Datuk Dr. Low Bin Tick memberitahu, perkhidmatan berkenaan akan merangkumi Lebuh Raya Utara-Selatan; Lebuh Raya Shah Alam (Kesas), Elite dan NKVE; dan jalan utama persekutuan.

Sehubungan itu, katanya, seramai 2,000 anggota paramedik dan 50 buah ambulans akan diletakkan dalam keadaan bersiap sedia di seluruh negara.

Menurutnya, perkhidmatan ambulans kecemasan 24 jam yang diadakan sejak 1996 itu akan menjanjikan penambahbaikan dari aspek tenaga kerja, peralatan dan perkhidmatan.

''Pada tahun ini, bilangan ambulans kecemasan 24 jam bertambah kepada 50 buah. Selain itu, kami menerima lebih daripada 2,000 sukarelawan untuk terlibat dalam projek ini.''

Setiap ambulans akan ditempatkan di kawasan 'panas' kemalangan, jadi, kami mensasarkan masa kira-kira lima minit untuk ambulans kecemasan tiba ke tempat kejadian,'' jelasnya.

Beliau berkata demikian pada Majlis Pelancaran Perkhidmatan Ambulans Kecemasan 24 jam kali ke-14 di ibu pejabat SJAM di sini hari ini.

Khidmat kecemasan itu dilancarkan oleh Timbalan Pengerusi Genting Malaysia Berhad, Tun Haniff Omar.

Hadir sama, Ketua Turus (Latihan) SJAM, Datuk Dr. Lee Hoo Teong.

Pada majlis tersebut, Genting Malaysia Berhad menyumbangkan RM60,000 kepada SJAM untuk perkhidmatan ambulans kecemasan 24 jam itu.

Bin Tick memberitahu, pasukan itu menyasarkan beberapa lokasi 'panas' yang sering berlaku kemalangan seperti Gurun di Kedah; Pulau Pinang; dan Batu Pahat serta Pontian di Johor.

Jelasnya, perkhidmatan ambulans itu amat penting kerana jumlah kemalangan jalan raya lazimnya meningkat semasa musim perayaan.

Sementara itu, Haniff berkata, penglibatan Genting Malaysia Berhad dalam projek amal itu merupakan tanggungjawab sosial bagi mengurangkan kadar kemalangan jalan raya menjelang hari perayaan.

''Mangsa kemalangan memerlukan bantuan sewajarnya dan jika dibiarkan tanpa menerima rawatan awal dikhuatiri boleh membawa maut.

''Maka dengan bantuan ambulans kecemasan 24 jam ini dapat memberi perkhidmatan segera kepada mangsa kemalangan,'' katanya.

24-hour Emergency Services from St John Ambulance During Festive Season

KUALA LUMPUR: St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) will provide a 24-hour emergency ambulance service at various sites along the nation's expressways on Sept 18, 19, 26 and 27 for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season.

The emergency services were launched today by Genting Malaysia's deputy chairman Tun Haniff Omar at the SJAM headquarters in Cheras here.

SJAM Commander-in-Chief Datuk Dr Low Bin Tick said the services will cover the PLUS North-South Expressway; the Kesas, Elite and NKVE expressways; and federal trunk roads.

He said 2,000 paramedics and 50 ambulances nationwide will be on standby.

"This service is essential because the number of accidents usually rises during festive seasons.

"Moreover, the presence of ambulances shows that an accident has occured and this would definitely arouse awareness among the public to drive more carefully," he said at the launch.

Low said this year they had targeted several "accident prone hot spots" like Gurun in Kedah; Penang; and Batu Pahat and Pontian in Johor.

"We have also stationed our teams at several police stations so that they can respond immediately once the police recieved an emergency call," he added.

Genting Malaysia donated RM60,000 to SJAM which will go towards maintaining ambulances, medical equipment and cost of the medicines for the services rendered during the festive season.

Haniff hoped that the donation would come in handy to SJAM in upgrading their emergency ambulance services.

While we understand that accidents are unexpected and most unfortunate, we also strongly believe that accident victims should receive all the help they can get. It is indeed dangerous when a victim is left to wait for the ambulance, without receiving proper first aid treatment.

"For this reason, it is vital for the emergency ambulance service to be patrolling on major highways to ensure accident victims are given immediate attention," he added.

999, is the nationwide emergency number. The country 999 operating system manned by Telekom Malaysia and operates 24hrs daily. 999 can be dialed through fix-line phone or mobile phone. When there is no emergency, but you need ambulance to transport your family to hospital for routine check-up, don't call 999. Call your local non-emergency ambulance service provider. The emergency medical dispatcher will always ask for the following details:

You will then be asked about the incident/patient's condition. If possible, be ready to pass on as much detail about the patient as you can. Don't panic while giving information, talk slowly and clearly.

Operator : can you tell me about the patient condition?
Caller : A man about 60 y/o fainted suddenly, he still breathing.

The questions about the patient's condition do not delay the response and allow us to work out what resources are required. Remember: Don not hang up your phone until the operator tells you to do so.

The details of the call are then passed to the nearest ambulance medic by radio or telephone. The emergency response can be on its way as soon as we have the address.
The ambulance medics will be updated on their journey about the patient's condition and any information related to the safety. We will aim to get help to you as soon as possible within ten minutes.

In the meantime, you will be asked to help the ambulance medic to get quickly to the patient, e.g.

Turn on the lights inside and outside of your house.
Make sure the front door is open and unlocked.
If possible, have someone waiting outside to direct the ambulance medic.
Get out any medication the patient takes.
Ensure that any pets - especially dogs - are put away.
Don't off your hand-phone or put it in "silence" mode.
Be ready to receive any call back by the Emergency Medical Dispatcher.

You will be asked to give any information to help ensure the safety of the medics.

You will be told how to help the patient until the arrival of the ambulance medics.
When help arrives, the patient's condition will be assessed and pre-hospital care/ treatment will be given at the scene.

If after treatment, the patient's condition is still critical, then the local hospital will be alerted so as to prepare for their arrival.

The patient will either be taken to the local government hospital accident and emergency (A & E) department or to the private hospital of patient own choice (charges may apply).

The ambulance medic will report to the doctor or medical staff at hospital all the assessment and patient condition as well as pre-hospital care given to the patient.

Myth: Patients arriving hospital in emergency ambulances receive priority treatment at the A & E Department

Truth: ALL patients arriving at A & E Department will be assessed by the medical staff at the hospital. Those assessed as critical will be attended to first, followed by non-emergency cases.

Having handed over the patient the medic need to make sure paperwork is complete and their equipment and ambulance is ready for another call.

The headquaters of SJAM Tawau Area, State of Sabah was caught in fire on 4th of December, 2002. Since then, they have lost their beloved headquarters. Nearly 7 years later, with the help from local communities, they going to have a fund raising charity dinner, aims to raise fund to rebuild the headquarters.

According to the St. John Ambulance Malaysia (Incorporations) Act, 1971, St. John Ambulance Rules 1973, Part II 3.(1)(i) the newly appointed 6th Prime Minister of Malaysia YAB Dato' Seri Mohd Najib bin Haji Tun Abdul Razak SPMK SPMS SSSJ SPSA SSAP SIMP SPDK DUNM SPNS DSAP PNBS shall be the National President of St. John Ambulance Malaysia.

According to the St. John Ambulance Malaysia (Incorporations) Act, 1971, St. John Ambulance Rules 1973, Part II 3.(1)(ii). In the country new cabinet line up, YB Dato Seri Liow Tiong Lai SSAP DIMP SMP being appointed as the Health Minister of Malaysia. He shall be the National Deputy President of St. John Ambulance of Malaysia
